Take Those Iron Pills

Now that the last post briefly discussed how important it is to keep a steady blood flow to organs, let us talk about IRON. Iron can be a huge energy booster. People who lack iron generally suffer from anemia. People can lack iron due to heavy menstruation, limited iron in foods, internal bleeding from things like ulcers and excessive use of aspirin.

Why is iron so important? Our bodies use iron to produce hemoglobin, which is a part of red blood cells, that carry oxygen through your body. When we lack iron our red cells are smaller and lower oxygen is carried.

If you feel like you cannot concentrate, have headaches, feel grumpy, feel weak or have dizziness, you may have iron deficiency anemia. For those thinking "do I have anemia?" you never know and if you have these symptoms go see a doctor. Treating anemia or avoiding it, will increase your energy.

While I was sick, I know those nice little iron pills helped out. Taking iron supplements may just increase your energy if your food does not do the job. As a kids I had to take iron medicine and let me tell you, it tasted disgusting! Do not wait until your body lacks oxygen, check your iron.

Can iron increase your energy? You tell me!

Iron ... Good or Bad...

I think GOOD...

  1. Taking iron supplements over the years have definitely helped with my energy levels. During high school, I stopped eating meat. Shortly after, I began getting really dizzy and feeling really weak. After meeting with a doctor, I began taking iron supplements. This helped combat my dizzy spells, which had been so bad I couldn't see in front of me! The three supplements that really help me to this day are iron, potassium, and calcium. Potassium helps me to avoid intense leg/foot cramps that used to keep me up/wake me up at night. I always know when I haven't been taking my vitamins; the lack of energy and dizziness find a way to creep back into my life. So, yeah, I agree - iron supplements are great for boosting energy naturally, especially when you are not getting it from food sources. Also, spinach is a tasty way to incorporate iron in your life, too!

  2. I had a similar experience as Christiana. I stopped eating meat for a while too. I took iron pills because my level was too low to donate blood. Once I started to take it, it gave me energy and allowed me to donate:)
